12/29/2016: Things I Learned Today

1. Shoppers Warehouse has a Colossal doughnut with chocolate coating which is then covered with mini M&Ms. Oh my! While this has enough sugar for three or four days, it was very tasty. 🙂

2. I’m still impressed with Amazon’s shipping and delivery service. Everything from Stihl chainsaw oil caps, to dog food, to everyday products at decent prices shipped quickly to your door. And since I generally hate people, it saves me from going out to the crowded stores.

3. I have car project ADHD. There are so many ideas I have, but I don’t have the time or money to work on all of them, so I need to get a game plan and focus.

1. The Dewalt metal chop saw is freaking awesome. I don’t know why this type of saw was not on my radar prior to this. I used it to cut some angle iron and flat steel, and it cut through it like butter. The cuts are smooth and clean with no heat.

2. TIG welding is a lot about “under hood” time. I learn a little each time I weld stuff. I will look to move onto practicing aluminum in a couple weeks.

3. Merry Christmas!

12/19/2016: Things I Learned Today

1. Work is better with folks you get along with. I’m fortunate to work in a place where I get along with most of my co-workers which makes work a lot more palatable. Since my “real job” pays well and allows me to continue my hobbies, the easier it is for me to go to work, the better it is for me.

2. I know which 4-post lift I want to buy, but I’m having difficulty on spending the money. The money has been set aside for 9 months now, and it has been earmarked for a lift; however, I hate to spend the money. This is very typical for me, so it is something that I’m used to. I know once the new year rolls around, I’ll spend the money and get the lift in my garage.

3. I’m so looking forward to my carbide metal chop saw. I got a few projects lined up, and the new saw will be very handy to have around. I need to get practice in, and at some point, I will try to farm out my welding to friends to see if there is a possibility of a little side business.

12/17/2016: Things I Learned Today

1. There are a lot of choices for metal chop saws. After some google searching, I did find a recent (summer 2016) review of several carbide chop saws. After too much thinking, I finally decided on a Dewalt DW872. I got a “blemish” model for $60 less than a brand new one, so I will see just how blemished it is on Wednesday 12/21. Once I get a chance to used it, I will post a little about the saw.

2. By taking a bunch of time to rearrange, and there is still a bunch of work, I seem to have a little more workable room.

3. After driving a little while on slick roads this morning, it is too obvious that people just don’t know how to drive anymore. I think it is partly due to cars that are extremely safe and pretty much drive themselves. People just don’t need to know how to drive.

1. I’m really undecided on the Markersmith organization and facility. For $50 per month, a person can get access to the facility when a “full member” is in the building. This would align for most of my needs, but I’m not sure if I have a real reason, at this time, to join. There is some nice equipment located at the facility, 3D printing, electronics shop, laser cutting (wood), small CNC, nice wood shop and a decent metal shop (milling machine, band saw, lathe), but even with the nice equipment, I don’t now if I have a real use. I’ll think about it over the Holidays and decide after the new year.

2. I’m going to bypass an auction and buy a carbide chop saw for metal. This type of saw will fit into my metal cutting needs nicely for the garage, and Lowes looks to have a well reviewed saw in stock, so I will have one in my garage sometime this weekend.
